Hard to find rattan peel which is the outer skin of rattan cane. This peel is the skin of quality Manau rattan. Smooth golden yellow and tough peel. Use in decorative binding of rattan tea pot handles, bamboo and wood crafts and cane furniture weaving. Many old carving tools handles still retain its woven rattan binding to prevent handle mushrooming through mallet strikes. Many traditional kampong blacksmiths still bind knives, parang machete handles and wooden sheaths in ratan peel. Terracotta stoneware ceramics with rattan decorative bindings adds a touch of nostalgia feel a reminder of those keep warm rattan woven insulation lined basket for the pot of hot chinese tea. Soak peel in water before use to enhance flexibility especially in tight weave. Upon completion of weaving brush on Matt sealer as a non tacky binder to stabilise weave. When dried, brush on with shoe brush beeswax dressing preservative.
